EMS Frequently Asked Questions

What are the individual modules of EMS?

EMS includes EMS Email Continuity, a standby email service that ensures your organization always has access to email without downtime or data loss, no matter what happens to your local systems, staff, or infrastructure; EMS Enterprise Archive, the only comprehensive, zero maintenance Saas solution to solve email archiving needs of even the largest organizations; EMS Rapid Archive, a zero maintenance SaaS archiving service to meet essential archiving needs including those imposed by FRCP rules, for a fraction of the cost of on-premise alternatives, and EMS Email Security a best-in-class anti-virus and anti-spam service that automatically analyzes hundreds of thousands of attributes of every message to block unwanted content and validates addresses in Active Directory® and personal contacts to ensure legitimate messages are not blocked as spam.

What is the Managed Services Platform?

The unique Dell MessageOne Managed Services Platform consists of Dell MessageOne global datacenters, hosted at top-tier disaster recovery datacenters and minimal client side software installed at your site. Linux®-based, this architecture is immune to the viruses and malware that Windows®-based systems are susceptible to and by hosting off-site, EMS is not dependent on local servers, infrastructure or staff to eliminate the many risks of on-premise enterprise solutions.

Seamlessly integrating with Exchange, Active Directory, and Outlook® or Lotus Notes®, EMS provides automated user, contact, and distribution list synchronization to provide the integration that is usually lacking in on-demand services. Unlike other on-demand services, the Dell MessageOne Managed Services Platform provides rapid deployment and low total cost of ownership while meeting the broadest enterprise requirements for scalability, security, integration, and data privacy.

Is EMS difficult to deploy?

No. EMS can be fully deployed in as little as one hour, even for companies with 100,000 employees or more. Since EMS is a on-demand service, it includes all software, hardware, administration and support, and does not require any additional bandwidth or staff.

What hardware do I need?

The EMS solution is a fully managed service that is administered through a single web-based console. A lightweight Dell MessageOne server is deployed in your environment to synchronize information with your corporate systems and encrypt data for transfer to Dell MessageOne top-tier disaster recovery datacenters. Unlike pure in-the-cloud managed services, email is single instanced, compressed and encrypted, and attachments stubbed if desired to minimize data storage and bandwidth usage.

What email platforms are supported?

Microsoft® Exchange and Lotus Notes®

How are users managed?

EMS is the only solution that synchronizes user, alias, and distribution list information from the directory to automate the addition and deletion of users, aliases, and distribution list owners.

What security do you offer?

Perimeter spam and anti-virus security is provided by EMS Email Security or a third party spam and virus filtering service. All email is then fully encrypted for transport and storage at top-tier disaster recovery datacenter. For detailed security information review How EMS Email Continuity protects your data or contact your Dell MessageOne sales representative.

How long does it take to activate EMS Email Continuity?

During an outage, EMS Email Continuity will be up and running within 60-seconds of your activation command.

What platform does EMS run on?

EMS uses a Linux-based architecture that offers immunity from hardware failures, infrastructure problems, network outages, power loss, database corruption, and Windows viruses.

How does EMS work with Exchange 2007®?

Exchange 2007 has many new capabilities to enhance reliability and usefulness, but most organizations will want to augment the product with additional services for continuity, retention policy management, storage management and archiving. Adding the Dell MessageOne Email Management Service to Exchange 2007 is the lowest cost and most easily managed solution capable of addressing these needs.

Why should I use EMS on-demand services?

On-premise software solutions are susceptible to local infrastructure outages, configuration errors, and require substantial maintenance from IT staff including patch management, upgrades, server capacity management, and index maintenance. They just cannot provide the availability of remotely hosted, on-demand services. However most on-demand services lack the integration with corporate systems to synchronize user information, authentication services, and storage management in order to reduce maintenance burdens.

EMS is built on the Dell MessageOne Managed Services Platform that provides the high availability and maintenance free benefits of on-demand services with the integration capabilities of on-premise software. EMS provides a zero maintenance, standby email system, and an always available archiving and perimeter security system that ensures your organization always has access to email and archiving services without downtime or data loss.
